Three mountains in thirty hours: students and local comminuty unite to support the struggle against cancer
Burst is one of many student stations who helped broadcasting the Three Peaks Challenge, raising money for the Christie charity. This was a historic collab, with nine student radio stations working together to produce a 30 hour back-to-back live broadcast. This challenge involved a number of cljmbers from different backgrounds gathering and climbing three mountains in just over a day. The donation goal was smashed, with the current total sitting at £4,078 raised, and still climbing.
Burst Radio covered the climbers summiting and descending Ben Nevis, the tallest mountain in the UK, with segments from out wonderful hosts Daniel, Juliet, Elliott and Sasha.
We discussed the impressive feat the team were undertaking, other charity events and how music ties into these communal moments and the impact of cancer on some of the greatest artists of the 20th Century.
All the money from this event is going to the Christie charity, who directly support the largest cancer centre in Europe, the Christie hospital: patient care and treatment, research, and staff wellbeing are all funded by the donations. The excellent services provided at the hospital are enabled by these donations, with NHS funding not sufficient to meet the high standards of care needed for strong patient wellbeing.
The challenge is difficult enough as it is, but Jess Larb brought together 8 more stations, local community members, and charity staff members all into it, bringing together a range of people to emphasize just how important community is. Community is necessary when we are faced with hard times and sickness, both in supporting those in need, but also for outreach to affected loved ones - reminding each other of the sympathy, experiences and love we all share.
Jess is from Utter Radio at Salford University, and all credit is due to her for bringing all of us together for this event!
